Lakers began in 1989. In the initial stages Lakers was known as a Special Olympic Club as sport was our original reason for starting but this evolved greatly over the years and as a result we are no longer specifically a Special Olympic Club. Lakers is a now a Sport and Recreation Service for people with disabilities and it is our understanding our service is unique on the Island of Ireland. The club now plans to build and fit out a custom-built
multi-purpose centre for the future. Plans for the new centre include a
multi-purpose sports hall suitable for basketball, badminton, volleyball, a
bocce court, as well as specially designed facilities for art and drama rooms,
computer rooms and kitchens, all designed specifically for people with varying
levels of disability. The plans also include a “sensory room” and a garden to
stimulate members with more extreme
disabilities, as well as the “Drop-in Centre” which is so vital to members and
their families as it allows them to casually call in to the centre and catch up
with friends whenever suits. In 2011 we launched a major fundraising campaign called “Buy-
A-Brick” to facilitate the development of the new centre, to support this campaign please visit our buy-a-brick page.
We continue to be affiliated to Special Olympics Ireland and compete at Area, Regional and National Special Olympic Games. We have also had member's successfully represent Ireland at European and World Special Olympic Games.
We offer our members a wide selection of sport, social and recreation activities. We also hold Summer Camp for our members and due the phenomenal success of our Camp in previous years and due to huge demand for places our camp now runs for 8 weeks.
In addition to the above activities, Lakers organise family trips both in Ireland and abroad. These have proven to be very popular with our members with numbers participating increasing each year.
In 2007 Lakers leased a small warehouse in Bray in which to operate our service. We spent €60,000 refurbishing it which resulted in us being in a position to develop our service to the level it is today. However, we have outgrown this small building and with our numbers ever increasing, we undertook an innovative project to solve this problem.
In 2010 following a year long intensive campaign Wicklow County Council very generously allocated us a site on which to build our own permanent Centre.
